Are they Animal Symbols?

I love to look out for animal symbols when things are troubling me – or when I feel the need for affirmation. Butterflies are magnificent symbols of transformation. Many times have I seen butterflies when I’m walking and wished that they would stop and spread their wings so that I can admire their beauty fully displayed – and of course that I had my camera with me at the same time!

Animal Symbols

The many blessings of walking in nature include noticing the wild animal presence there, no matter how big or small and seemingly insignificant. But are these sightings symbols or signs?

Richard Littlefeather helped me to clarify my understanding around animal symbols when he explained that when we see animals in nature simply going about their business, that is exactly what they are doing – going about their business! However, if you are pondering something with an open heart and an eagle does the unusual thing of flying overhead five times or lands in a tree and looks straight at you, or as happened to a friend of mine, an eagle landed on the path in front of her and led her to discover something very special nearby, then this is unquestionably something to take note of – a sign.

Symbols and Intentions

Often as I walk, butterflies surround me, sometimes fluttering close, surprising me or rising in a small cloud across my path so that their presence can’t be missed. If at the time, I am aware of a question I’m seeking confirmation for, then I know for me this is confirmation. If instead, I see a butterfly going about its business, I am reminded of nature’s beauty and say words of gratitude and remember that transformation is a wonderful thing; and this also enriches my life.

Finally, the day came last week when I had my phone with me on my walk. I had taken it especially as my simple intention for my walk was to observe something stunning that I could photograph and write about.

Sneaky Thoughts!

My intention made clear; I began to walk. After a short time, I realised that my brain was having a wonderful time saying, ‘Hah! There won’t be anything startling! Just the usual things. I enjoy everything I see!’ My brain often does this. It thinks a thought contrary to what I want to happen. This is a normal thing that happens to most people in some way. When I notice these thoughts, I decide to re-affirm what I want to happen, so I say (often out loud, surprising anyone in earshot!), ‘I am going to see something stunning today. I wonder what it will be?’

Something Stunning!

Then it happened. A butterfly flew close, turned and flew back even closer. Then, to my surprise, it landed on a sunny spot close by and spread its wings. Even when I came closer to photograph its magnificence, it stayed with its wings out wide, saying, ‘Look at me, I’m stunning!’

So, where-ever you are. In the city, in nature or even inside, be aware of your thoughts and also be aware of what is around you … and you just might … if you ask for it …. see something that is extra stunning …. just like I did!
